Opinion: House Republicans’ Impeachment Weaponization Backfires

House Republicans Fail to Achieve Impeachment Goals: A Humiliating End to Tit-for-Tat Efforts

House Republicans have finally achieved something big: an end to tit-for-tat impeachments. After vowing to impeach President Biden and members of his Cabinet, they managed to impeach Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro N. Mayorkas, but their efforts have largely failed. The Senate quickly dismissed the charges against Mayorkas, signaling an end to the impeachment follies.

The collapse of the Mayorkas prosecution has deflated House Republicans, who have also struggled with their impeachment efforts against President Biden. With no hard evidence of an impeachable offense, Republicans have failed to garner enough support to proceed with the impeachment. Instead, they are now considering sending a criminal referral to the Justice Department.

The impeachment efforts against Mayorkas and Biden have been purely political exercises, with Republicans using them as platforms to stoke voters’ anger. However, the Senate’s dismissal of the charges against Mayorkas sets a good precedent that impeachment should be based on high crimes and misdemeanors, not policy disputes.

While some Republicans have criticized Democrats for impeaching Trump twice, the two well-deserved Trump impeachments are vastly different from the impeachment attempts against Mayorkas and Biden. The failures of these impeachment efforts highlight the need for seriousness and evidence in the impeachment process.

In the end, House Republicans have essentially folded the Big Top on the Biden impeachment circus, with their efforts coming up short. The Senate’s dismissal of the charges against Mayorkas marks a turning point in the impeachment saga, hopefully putting an end to the tit-for-tat impeachments that have dominated the political landscape.
