Key National Issues: An Interview with Senator Yemi Adaramodu, Spokesman of the Senate

Senator Yemi Adaramodu, the spokesman of the Senate, recently sat down for an exclusive interview where he discussed various key national issues. In the interview, he highlighted the three major functions of the legislature, which include making laws, carrying out oversight, and representing the people.

Adaramodu expressed satisfaction with the legislative performance of the 10th Senate, especially in terms of passing life-changing motions on the economy, infrastructure, and security. He also mentioned the significant bills that have been passed, such as those related to security, arms proliferation, and petroleum tax law.

On the issue of oversight, Adaramodu emphasized the importance of monitoring the budget execution and performance of government agencies. He mentioned specific instances where Senate committees have conducted oversight activities, such as visiting refineries, UTME centers, and NYSC camps.

Addressing concerns about insecurity hindering oversight activities, Adaramodu refuted claims that some committee chairmen have cited security reasons for not conducting oversight. He cited examples of committees that have successfully carried out oversight activities in potentially risky areas, such as road construction sites and orientation camps.

Regarding recent comments by two senators supporting changes to the minimum age requirement for admission into tertiary institutions, Adaramodu clarified that such comments are not laws and would need to go through the legislative process to become law.

Adaramodu also addressed the issue of food security, highlighting the allocation of funds to agriculture in the 2024 budget as a step towards boosting food production. He emphasized the need for all Nigerians to take agriculture seriously and contribute to food security.

In response to President Bola Tinubu’s call for reduced summons to his appointees, Adaramodu explained that summoning MDAs is done based on substantial reasons and with prior notice. He emphasized the importance of a coordinated approach between the executive and legislative arms for effective governance.

Overall, Senator Adaramodu’s interview shed light on the Senate’s legislative achievements, oversight activities, and plans for addressing key national issues. His insights provide valuable perspective on the Senate’s role in governance and development in Nigeria.
