Catholic Bishop Seeks President’s Intervention for Missing Priest in South Sudan

In a desperate plea for help, Bishop Hiiboro of South Sudan has reached out to President Salva Kiir Mayardit for assistance in locating a missing priest and his driver. Fr. Luke and Michael have been missing for the last two days between Nagero County and Tombura County on the Wau road.

Fr. Luke had been on a pastoral mission to serve the people of God in Nagero County when contact was lost on April 27, 2024. The area where they went missing is under the control of the SPLM/ (10) forces, adding to the urgency of the situation.

In a statement addressed to President Kiir on April 29, Bishop Hiiboro asked for immediate intervention to ensure the safe return of Fr. Luke and his driver. Despite reaching out to local authorities without success, the Bishop believes that the President is the only one with the power to bring them back alive.

In an audio recording obtained by ACI Africa, Bishop Hiiboro expressed his deep concern for the situation in Tombura County, calling for the imposition of a state of emergency. He emphasized the need for President Kiir to take action and bring peace to the troubled region.

As the Catholic Church leader continues to seek assistance from the government, he asks for prayers from the entire people of God for the safety of Fr. Luke and his driver. The community is urged to remain calm and show restraint while waiting for the State Government to take appropriate actions.

The urgency of the situation is clear, and Bishop Hiiboro’s plea for help highlights the need for immediate intervention to ensure the safe return of the missing priest and his driver. President Kiir’s quick response is eagerly awaited as the community comes together in prayer for their safe return.
