Perpetrators of Political Violence Targeting Women: Trends and Analysis

The Perpetrators of Violence Targeting Women (PVTW) are a significant concern globally, with one-third of such violence being perpetrated by Unidentified Armed Groups (UAGs). This alarming trend is highlighted in recent research by ACLED and PRIO, which sheds light on the various perpetrators of PVTW and their impact on women’s security.

According to the research, UAGs are not the only perpetrators of PVTW, as one-quarter of such violence is carried out by political militias and gangs, while one-fifth is carried out by state forces. Rebel groups, violent mobs, communal militias, and external forces also play a role in perpetrating PVTW, each contributing to the overall threat faced by women.

The research also delves into the regional differences in perpetrators of PVTW, with state forces being particularly active in East Asia and Southeast Asia, while rebels are more prevalent in Central Asia and the Caucasus. Gangs are disproportionately active in Latin America, while communal militias are more prevalent in South Asia and Africa. External forces, on the other hand, are least active across all regions, but still pose a threat in the Middle East.

Furthermore, the research highlights the importance of including these various perpetrators in data collection efforts to fully understand the threat that women face.
