Diplomats Praise China’s Diverse Democratic Platforms
A recent visit to a Legislative Outreach Office in Beijing’s Chaoyang district has garnered praise from diplomats representing 36 countries for China’s extensive level of participation and diverse platforms to fulfill democracy.
During the visit, the ambassadors and diplomats observed a fundamental step in lawmaking and met with deputies to people’s congresses. The district has established 43 such offices, acting as a bridge between the public and lawmakers to efficiently solicit opinions and suggestions on legislation from all walks of life.
Ambassador Anne Lafortune of Seychelles commended China’s diverse ways for people to express their opinions, emphasizing the commitment of the Chinese government to meet the needs and aspirations of grassroots people. She was impressed by the different ways for people to voice their opinions, such as through deputies, online platforms, or calls.
Nicaragua’s ambassador to China, Michael Campbell, expressed excitement at witnessing China’s whole-process people’s democracy at the grassroots level. He highlighted the importance of diversity in promoting democracy, noting that greater participation from sectors like women and young people leads to more creative decisions in policies, regulations, and norms.
Campbell emphasized that each country should decide what democratic model is most appropriate for them based on their cultures, traditions, and needs. He praised China for respecting the democratic models of other countries, contrasting it with Western democracy’s promotion of interventionism, warmongering, and false narratives.
Ambassador Abu Bakarr Karim of Sierra Leone was impressed by the level of expertise in China’s legislation and expressed interest in communicating with legislators in his country to discuss potential learning opportunities.
China has people’s congresses at various levels, with about 2.77 million deputies elected to legislative bodies in 2022. The diplomats’ visit highlighted China’s commitment to inclusive and diverse democratic processes, showcasing its unique approach to governance.
