Republican Primary Runoff Debate Highlights: Craig Goldman vs. John O’Shea
Republican primary runoff candidates, state Rep. Craig Goldman and business owner John O’Shea, faced off in a heated debate over conservative credentials for an open congressional seat in North Texas. The debate, moderated by Dana Loesch, highlighted key differences between the candidates, including their stance on impeachment of Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton.
O’Shea, backed by Paxton, framed the race as a battle between the “America First-Paxton side” and the “establishment, team Phelan side.” He criticized Goldman for his vote to impeach Paxton, while Goldman defended his decision, citing the need to follow the constitution.
The candidates also discussed their positions on various issues, including abortion, gun rights, and border security. Both candidates advocated for strict measures at the U.S.-Mexico border, with Goldman emphasizing his support for Texas-funded border security measures and O’Shea calling for the border to be closed to combat human trafficking and drug smuggling.
In addition to border security, the candidates differed on education policy, with both expressing a desire to shut down the U.S. Department of Education. O’Shea labeled the department as an “unconstitutional usurpation of state rights,” while Goldman supported legislation for parents to receive public money for private school tuition.
The primary runoff, scheduled for May 28, will determine the Republican nominee to replace retiring U.S. Rep. Kay Granger in the 12th Congressional District. The district, designed to favor Republicans, is expected to remain in GOP hands. Both candidates are vying for the opportunity to represent the district and advance their conservative agendas.
