Candidates in Orlando’s District 5 Special Election Build Substantial War Chests

Four candidates in Orlando’s District 5 special election are off to a strong start in fundraising, with substantial war chests in the first two weeks of campaigning. Community activist Lawanna Gelzer leads the pack with $21,000 in the bank, fueled by a $20,000 loan to her campaign. Nonprofit executive Shan Rose follows closely behind with $15,840, including $6,000 in in-kind contributions. Miss America winner Ericka Dunlap and former State Rep. Travaris McCurdy have also raised significant amounts, with $10,740 and $10,500 respectively.

The four frontrunners have pulled ahead of the other candidates in the crowded field, who have only raised enough to cover the filing fee. Tiakeysha Ellison, Miles Mulrain, and Cameron Hope have self-funded or received minimal contributions compared to their competitors.

The campaign finance reports provide insight into the state of play in the race to fill the interim District 5 city commissioner seat, left vacant after incumbent Regina Hill’s suspension due to elder abuse charges. Election Day is set for May 21, with a potential runoff on June 18 if no candidate secures a majority.

Each candidate has employed different strategies to build their funds, with Gelzer and McCurdy leading in expenditures. Rose, who has garnered support from the Laborers’ International Union of North America, emphasizes her relationships within the community. Dunlap, with the most contributors, focuses on small-dollar donations to secure votes in what is expected to be a low-turnout election.

As the candidates continue to campaign, the race for District 5 promises to be competitive and dynamic. Stay tuned for updates on this developing story.
