President Biden to Honor Diverse Group with Presidential Medal of Freedom

Clarence B. Jones, a key figure in the Civil Rights Movement, received a surprising phone call from the White House informing him that President Joe Biden wanted to honor him with the Presidential Medal of Freedom. At 93 years old, Jones, who provided legal counsel to Martin Luther King Jr. and helped write parts of the iconic “I Have a Dream” speech, was taken aback by the news.

Jones is among a diverse group of 19 individuals who will be recognized for their exemplary contributions to the prosperity, values, or security of the United States. The recipients come from various fields including politics, sports, entertainment, civil rights, LGBTQ+ advocacy, science, and religion. Three medals will be awarded posthumously.

Among the notable recipients are former New York mayor Michael Bloomberg, Rep. James Clyburn, former Vice President Al Gore, and former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi. The list also includes posthumous recognition for civil rights activist Medgar Evers and historic figures like Michelle Yeoh and Jim Thorpe.

Jones expressed his gratitude for the honor and stated that he is looking forward to whatever the White House has planned for him. The Presidential Medal of Freedom will be awarded to Jones and the other recipients in a ceremony on Friday. This prestigious award recognizes the outstanding achievements and contributions of individuals who have made a significant impact on society.
