Advancing Social Justice in Bangladesh: A Path to Inclusive and Equitable Societies
Bangladesh Leads the Way in Promoting Social Justice Through Labour Sector Reforms
Every year, on 20th February, the World Day of Social Justice serves as a reminder of the importance of creating societies that are more equitable and just. In a world where injustices, job insecurities, and rising inequality persist, the need to prioritize social justice has never been more urgent. Momentum is growing globally to address these issues, recognizing social justice as a moral obligation and a critical component in the pursuit of enduring peace and sustainable development.
In the context of these global challenges, Bangladesh has emerged as a shining example of progress in promoting social justice through its labour sector reforms. Over the past five decades, the country has experienced significant socio-economic advancement, largely driven by its labour force. According to the 2022 Bangladesh Labour Force Survey, the labour force participation rate stands at 61.2 per cent, with a notable rise in female participation from 36 per cent in 2010 to 42.8 per cent in 2022.
Bangladesh has implemented various initiatives to reshape its labour sector, with a focus on promoting social justice and inclusion through decent work. The country has ratified key international conventions, such as the Minimum Age Convention and the Worst Forms of Child Labour Convention, and has made significant progress in reducing child labour and forced labour. The government, in collaboration with its social partners, is actively pursuing reforms in the labour sector to advance labour laws, trade union registration, and labour inspection.
Furthermore, Bangladesh is testing the viability of an Employment Injury Scheme in the ready-made garment sector to provide compensation to workers for workplace injuries and deaths. The country has also developed a National Plan of Action on Occupational Safety and Health and is in the process of establishing a National Occupational Safety and Health Training and Research Institute to promote a preventative safety culture in the workplace.
By prioritizing safe working conditions, equal treatment, and opportunities for all workers, Bangladesh is upholding the economic well-being and dignity of its labour force. The country’s efforts to promote equality, labour rights, and gender-responsive empowerment are crucial elements of social justice.
Bangladesh’s participation in the Global Coalition for Social Justice further underscores its commitment to fostering a society that is more equitable and just for all. By collaborating with international organizations and adopting sustainable work practices, Bangladesh is leading the way in promoting social justice through labour sector reforms.
As the world continues to grapple with social injustices and inequalities, Bangladesh’s example serves as a beacon of hope and inspiration for other nations to follow suit in prioritizing social justice and creating inclusive societies for all.
